On this offbeat travel destination we have a museum dedicated entirely to tow trucks and recovery vehicles. Chattanooga, Tennessee is proud to be the birthplace of the tow truck and home to the world's largest tow truck factory. So it's no surprise that Chattanooga has an organization called “Friends of Towing,” or that they've built The International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame And Museum. The Friends of Towing created the ITRHFM in order to preserve the history of towing, give props to towing legends, and to memorialize those who died in the line of towing. The museum's “wall of the fallen” features the engraved names of tow truck drivers who were killed while helping others, and features a sculpture of a heroic tower pulling a mother and child to safety from a car sinking in their memorial fountain. The museum floor features fully restored tow trucks from throughout history, including a 1953 Model W-70 nicknamed “Dad.” “Dad” is the largest mechanical wrecker ever made and costs over 100,000 dollars to restore. And Dioramas throughout the museum depict scenes of famous tow truck models rescuing cars from dire situations. If you've ever been saved by a tow truck after breaking down on the side of a road and happen to be in Chattanooga, Tennessee, then stop in to The International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum to learn a little bit more about the machines that helped you and the men who operate them.
